If you're even the slightest bit off center in your humor and you live in the greater Seattle area, you've probably already made your pilgrimage to the Mecca of Kitsch. Archie McPhee is one of the all-time greatest sources of rare, weird and wonderful gag and party items. Walking into the store, (which has apparently moved again) on Stone Way in the Wallingford neighborhood in Seattle is like being sucked into a real-life version of the ads at the back of your favorite comic book. I could go on, but I have learned that one thing kitsch retailers are really good at is self-promotion. So here's a description from the home page of Archie McPhee's website.
Archie McPhee has been supplying gifts and toys to Seattle since 1983. Located in Seattle's Wallingford neighborhood, it's a one stop shop for party supplies, crafts, costumes, miniatures and the weirdest collection of toys and candy that you've ever seen.
Widely considered to be a Mecca for connoisseurs of the strange and one of Seattle's top ten weird destinations, it is truly an attraction without a parallel.
If you don't live near Seattle, and are desperate for a taste of the unusual and exceptionally bizarre, you're in luck. They have a website. I strongly encourage you to at least check it out. While it is not the same experience as visiting the store, it has a huge selection to suit the most discriminating kitsch palate.
Enjoy. And Aloha.

If you'd rather order from Amazon, here's an alternate tiki mug selection.

Incidentally, what's your favorite Archie McPhee story?
ReplyDeleteI, (whimper) do not have one yet. For all of the time I have lived in this town, I have never gone there. Sad.
ReplyDeleteI need to change this. Maybe a Blogger Friends Field Trip.
